THE
DEAD SECRET Programme for the first night of The Dead Secret The stage version of The
Dead Secret was first performed at the Royal Lyceum Theatre on 29 August
1877. According to the programme, it was 'Adapted,
by the Author's express permission, from the Popular Novel' by E. J. Bramwell.
Sarah Leeson was played by Miss Bateman and Shrowle (sic) by Arthur
Pinero. A review in The World of 5 September extended praise
to both Collins and the original novel but pronounced the play 'a very poor
adaptation' and 'a clumsy melodrama'. [ Cast list
